How to Choose a Metal Silo

DATE : Jun 19th, 2024

Choosing the right silo and getting a high-quality silo at a competitive price involves understanding the specific requirements of your storage needs and evaluating the characteristics of different types of silos. Here’s a detailed guide to help you make an informed decision:

Bulk Steel Storage Silos

A steel silo is a tool made of riveted, welded, or combined steel plates for storing different types of bulk materials. It has the characteristics and advantages of pressure resistance, waterproofing, a high degree of automation, and easy maintenance. It is one of the indispensable and important equipment in modern agriculture, industry, and other fields. In other words, according to the application field, it can be divided into agricultural silos and industrial silos. Among industrial silos, chemicals steel silos have the highest technical requirements for silo production.

Steel silo has the following characteristics:

High strength. Made of high-strength steel, it has good compression resistance and can store various materials.
Anti-corrosion. Made of high-quality steel, it has good corrosion resistance and is suitable for different environments.
Waterproof and moisture-proof. Use high-quality waterproof materials to effectively prevent moisture from entering and ensure the dryness of stored materials.
High degree of automation. Using advanced control technology, automatic entry and exit can be realized, which improves work efficiency and saves time and labor costs.
Easy maintenance. The structure is simple, maintenance and repair are convenient, and the service life can be effectively extended.
Easy to install. It has a modular design and can be assembled differently according to needs, providing flexibility and diversity.
Energy saving and environmental protection. Using advanced thermal insulation materials, it has good thermal insulation performance.

Flat-Bottom & Hopper
Metal silos come in two bottom shapes. One is the flat-bottom metal silo, and the other is the hopper mental silo. They are all different and each has its characteristics.

Flat-Bottom Metal Silo
The flat-bottom metal silo has a relatively larger capacity and is suitable for long-term storage. Therefore it is often used to store grains that require long-term storage. It is not difficult to find it in grain stations, breweries, feed mills, flour mills, and other places. The flat-bottom metal silo can be built using welding technology or fixed with bolts, but the most popular one currently is the spiral double-layer steel silo, also known as the Lipp silo.

Hopper Metal Silo
The hopper metal silo has a relatively small capacity and is suitable for temporary storage. Since it has a tapered bottom, it is easier to load and unload materials, which also makes cleaning its bottom more efficient.

Types Of Silos
The types of metal silos can be divided according to different standards. According to their appearance, metal silos are divided into corrugated silos, skirted silos, and spiral silos.

Corrugated silo

Corrugated silo is also called bolted silo and assembly silo, which tends to be manufactured using hot-dip galvanized steel sheets. Due to its poor air-tightness and rapid heat loss, corrugated silos are mostly used as grain silos. Its strength is relatively low, so its weight is relatively light, and less steel is consumed during production. Corrugated silos have a high degree of standardization, which makes it can be disassembled and reused. Because it is easy to disassemble, there is less residue, and it is easier to maintain and can be rectified later. And it is also easy to mechanize. In addition, it has a small footprint and the minimum distance between silos can reach 500 mm.

Spiral Silo

Spiral steel silo, also known as Lipp silo, is a metal silo that can be produced using iron, but most manufacturers use ordinary steel plate Q235 for production. If the thickness of the silo wall to be produced exceeds the processing capacity of the production equipment or you want a higher anti-corrosion effect, you can also choose alloy materials, such as stainless steel or aluminum alloy, but the cost is relatively high. Whether silos are made of steel silos, stainless steel silos, or other alloys, they require galvanizing for further corrosion protection. If the silo becomes rusty during use, you can use polishing or sandblasting to remove rust, and then apply a layer of anti-corrosion paint. If necessary, silos can also be protected against corrosion using coating technology.

The main metal silos for sale are as follows:

Grain Silo
Corn Silo
Cement Silo
Fly Ash Silo
