INTRODUCTION
Fly Ash Silo

Fly ash is one industry powder type. To storage fly ash needs to avoid wet air. Spiral steel silo is the best steel structure for fly ash storage. Bidragon spiral silo adopts imported LIPP technology from Germany. All of our steel silo are in round shape with diameter from 3 meters to 30 meter per silo.

Bidragon fly ash silo includes hopper bottom steel silo and flat bottom steel silo. The conical hopper bottom silo capacity always be small and not more than 2000 ton. Each fly ash silo will be equipped with some accessory equipment, such as vibrator on silo hopper, aeration box on silo hopper, in order to ensure the fly ash discharge smoothly. The flat bottom silo always has invert cone inside steel silo bottom, whose function is to reduce the pressure when discharging fly ash from the center of steel silo top. For this type, the invert cone can avoid the fly ash flowing down to the aeration box directly. Here, the aeration box is used to make the fly ash discharge smoothly. During the flat bottom silo for fly ash storage, sometimes we will design several invert cones inside silo bottom.

Bidragon fly ash silo structure includes steel structure and concrete foundation structure. Steel structure foundation silo is always be small and this small silo capacity is less than 1500 ton, while the concrete structure foundation silo generally big and silo capacity is more than 1500ton.

How to Clean Fly Ash Storage Silo?

Fly ash silos are essential storage systems widely used in power plants, cement plants, and other industrial facilities. They help manage and supply fly ash efficiently for production processes. However, without regular cleaning and maintenance, fly ash can accumulate, harden, and cause blockages or even structural risks. Below is a concise and restructured guide to safe and effective fly ash silo cleaning.

1. Why Cleaning Fly Ash Silos Matters

Over time, stored fly ash may compact and solidify, leading to discharge blockages and poor material flow. This can negatively impact unloading systems and ventilation performance. In addition, uneven accumulation may place extra stress on the silo structure, increasing the risk of deformation or safety incidents.

2. Pre-Cleaning Inspection and Preparation

Before cleaning begins, proper preparation is critical:

  • Isolate the system:Seal all inlet and outlet pipelines and secure them with warning signs.
  • Empty the silo:Ensure no fly ash remains, and place downstream equipment in maintenance mode.
  • Check internal conditions:Confirm the silo interior is dry and free of debris such as wood, bricks, or slag.
  • Inspect equipment:Verify that dust collectors, ventilation systems, valves, and iron removal devices are functioning properly.
  • Install safety warnings:Set up clear signage around the site to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Lighting setup:Use safe, insulated, and explosion-proof lighting placed from the top opening.

3. Safety Requirements for Workers

Safety is the top priority during silo cleaning:

  • Workers must wear full protective gear, including dust masks, goggles, helmets, and safety shoes.
  • Each worker inside the silo must use dual safety ropes—one fixed externally and one attached to a ladder.
  • Maintain a 2:1 supervision ratio(two people outside for every one inside).
  • Ensure stable ladders, platforms, and structures before entry.
  • Maintain constant communication between inside and outside personnel.
  • Strictly prohibit the use of explosives or unsafe tools.

4. Cleaning Procedure

(1) Initial Inspection

Workers enter from the top to assess fly ash accumulation, hardness, and blockage locations. This helps determine the cleaning approach.

(2) Air Blowing

Use compressed air to loosen hardened fly ash, starting from the bottom and working upward. Adjust pressure carefully to avoid structural damage or dust hazards.

(3) Manual Removal

Stubborn deposits are removed using tools such as iron rods, long sticks, or shovels. Workers must avoid damaging the silo walls. If necessary, temporary discharge openings can be created to improve efficiency.

(4) Step-by-Step Cleaning

Clean progressively from top to bottom to prevent recontamination. Regularly check cleaning results and ensure no residue remains.

(5) Final Inspection and Cleanup

After cleaning:

  • Inspect the entire silo interior, discharge outlets, and structural components
  • Remove all debris and tools
  • Dismantle temporary installations
  • Restore equipment to normal operation

  • Ensure proper ventilation before entering the silo to avoid oxygen deficiency or harmful gases.
  • Always use tested and insulated equipment to prevent electrical hazards.
  • Avoid working at height without proper safety planning and equipment.
  • Stay alert to falling materials during cleaning operations.
